West Nile Virus Confirmed in Carroll County

The Equine Disease Communication Center reported today that a case of West Nile Virus (WNV) has been confirmed in an unvaccinated, three-year-old Standardbred gelding in Carroll County. The horse is showing neurological deficits but is alive.

The fatality rate for a symptomatic horse is between 30% and 40%.

The WNV vaccination is on the American Association of Equine Practitioners list of annual core vaccinations. It is a 2-dose series with the second dose 4-6 weeks after the first dose.
