The results of the American Horse Council’s Economic Impact Study of the Maryland horse industry are out, and it shows that every sector of our industry has grown since 2017. The overall industry grew 38%, from $2.1 billion in 2017 to $2.9 billion today.
The fastest growing sector of the industry is the competition section, which grew 37% from $270 million in 2017 to over $370 million today. The number of jobs in the sector grew from 3,346 to 4,154. Behind the competition sector is the recreation sector, which grew 20.6% from $382 million to $461 million. The Thoroughbred racing sector, which accounts for 20% of the overall industry, grew 3.3% from $571 million to $591 million.
