Letter from the President

first published in the February 2026 issue of The Equiery

As President of the Maryland Horse Council, I want to begin by expressing my sincere gratitude for the opportunity to serve you and the broader Maryland equestrian community. It is an honor to stand alongside horse owners, trainers, breeders, trail riders, business owners, and all who share a passion for horses–a community as diverse and vibrant as the horses we love.

We are part of an organization that has represented our industry with distinction for many years. Our council works every day to promote, protect, inform, and connect horse people across the state. We advocate for sensible public policy, support equine health and welfare, and bring people together through education, networking, and meaningful events. Our work in legislative advocacy, from land use and trails access to insurance and taxation, is vital to safeguarding our way of life and the future of our horses.

Our members are the heart of this organization. Your experiences, voices, and commitment are what give us strength and purpose. Whether you ride on trails, compete in shows, run equine-related businesses, or simply enjoy the quiet bond with your horse, your perspective matters. One of my top priorities is ensuring each of you feels heard, valued, and connected to the horse council’s mission.

Some of my priorities over the coming months:

Expand Member Engagement

I want to hear directly from you about what matters most—the challenges you face, the opportunities you see, and the changes you want to help shape. Please feel free to share your personal insight and suggestions by emailing admin@mdhorsecouncil.org. We want to gather your input in order to ensure MHC is aligned with your priorities.

Strengthen Communication and Transparency

We are always working to improve how we share updates on policy work, committee activities, and upcoming events, so you feel informed and connected. Stay tuned to our social media and look for our regular newsletters which reflect the full breadth of our council’s work.

Support Education and Community Building

From webinars to social gatherings, from trail stewardship initiatives to webinars, our goal is to provide more ways for you to learn, connect, and thrive within our equestrian network. These opportunities are for every member—whether you’re a lifelong equestrian or newly joining our community.

As we move forward together, I encourage each of you to remain active in your horse community. Every member has something to contribute, and together we can continue building an inclusive, effective, and inspiring horse community.

Thank you again for your support and trust. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our community and create a future where every horse and horse person in Maryland can flourish.
